Mary and Joe

Sheltered Lakes was founded by Joseph and Mary Zanini in 1948. Through dedication and a lot of hard work, they, along with the help of “Uncle Louie”, built the entrance drive, cabins and bridge.

Mary & Joe managed the property with the help of their friends, son, Edmund, his ex-wife, Therese, and grandchildren for 40 years.   Upon their retirement in 1988, Edmund, assumed management of the property.

It was a big job for one man. In 1997, Edmund met Karen Steele and together, they brought Sheltered Lakes into the realm of the world wide web and built Sheltered Lakes into the business it is today. In 2011, Edmund and his partner Karen passed the reins on to Edmund’s four children, Gayle, Doug, Andrew and Barbara.

The Zanini siblings grew up sharing an incredible love, respect and devotion to Sheltered Lakes, and we take pleasure in continuing to share its beauty with our guests who appreciate it as much as we do!

Cabins and property

In the 1920’s and 1930s, Sheltered Lakes was a retreat camp for medical professionals.  At that time, it was called, “Rocky Pond”.  Have a look at the old brochure which shows the efforts the previous owner made to keep the camp going through the Great Depression.
